"Women at work" - our motto for our June 2021 newsletter. We are pleased to present new editions created by 2 innovative women artists for our Editions series: The American-based German artist Bianca Pratorius, who creates wonderful wall installations with felt, and the Dutch artist Hetty Huisman, who, in addition to sculptures in zinc, has now also created a particularly poetic interactive edition that invites you to play.  Let yourself be drawn into new forms of artistic expression without much explanation! As Louise Bourgeois so aptly said: "A work of art doesn't have to be explained".

Hetty Huisman about her work:

The caps are made of zinc (cut /shaped/ welded/sanded). All of the coloured pieces are of plastics used in the food industry.

The plant that makes presses for the food industry has sometimes some left overs which I saved from a container and of which I made these cylinders. The same goes for the wood zylinders. For the wooden bouquets I used safed loggs from the fireplace.

“I call my new works Bouquets re-turned; returned refers to the pieces who get a second chance in life and I had to turn them in my wood lathe and metal lathe in order to get these shapes.”

Die Kappen der Zylinder sind aus Zink gefertigt (geschnitten/ geformt/ geschweißt/ geschliffen) Alle farbigen Teile sind aus Kunststoffteilen, die in der Lebensmittelindustrie verwendet werden.

«Die Fabrik, die Pressen für die Lebensmittelindustrie herstellt, hat manchmal ein paar Reststücke, die ich aus einem Abfallcontainern herausgenommen und daraus diese Zylinder hergestellt habe. Für die Holzbouquets habe ich Holzscheite aus dem Kamin verwendet und daraus neue Kunst gefertigt.

Ich nenne meine neuen Arbeiten Bouquets returned; returned bezieht sich auf die Teile, die eine zweite Chance im Leben bekommen, und ich musste sie in meiner Holzdrehbank und Metalldrehbank drehen, um diese Formen zu erhalten."

“It was March, Covid19 spoiled all our plans, my exhibition was cancelled before it was due.  I was really devastated and asked myself: now what?

A long-cherished desire came to the surface! It was time for something new,....a metal turning lathe! This was something I had seen at a friend’s studio and this machine intrigued me enormously. I bought one and started experimenting to turn hard plastics pieces.

Why was this a dream or a desire? Well I have made many zinc sculptures for gardens. For outside. But my main material Zinc is also very applicable for indoor sculptures.

For some time I have been looking for a combination of zinc and something else… plastics because of their colors… Wood because this is such a wonderful medium… I started my career as a ceramist and I saw a flash back of me working at the turning wheel with clay...  I saw some parallels with what I had done before but with different techniques.

I made cylinders, free standing objects that can be rearranged as you wish and this way it is an interactive artwork. I love to make art that is movable.

The colored cylinders refer to flowers and the ensemble to a bouquet. After the combination of recycled plastics and zinc I experimented with wood and zinc. So the time off from shows gave me new insights and new avenues to explore. These smaller objects give interesting dinner table conversations and are tremendous changes from my big outdoor sculptures.

«Es war März, Covid19 hat alle unsere Pläne durchkreuzt, meine bevorstehende Ausstellung wurde abgesagt.  Ich war wirklich am Boden zerstört und fragte mich: Was nun?

Ein lang gehegter Wunsch wurde verwirklicht! Es war Zeit für etwas Neues, ....eine Metalldrehmaschine! So etwas hatte ich bei einem Freund im Atelier gesehen, und diese Maschine faszinierte mich. Ich kaufte eine eigene und begann damit zu experimentieren, um harte Kunststoffteile zu drehen.

Warum war das ein Traum oder ein Wunsch? Nun, ich habe viele Zinkskulpturen für Gärten gemacht, aber mein Hauptmaterial Zink eignet sich auch sehr gut für Innenraum-Skulpturen.

Seit einiger Zeit habe ich nach einer Kombination von Zink und etwas anderem gesucht. Kunststoff wegen der Farben.... Holz, weil es ein wunderbares Medium ist... Ich habe meine Künstlerkarriere als Keramikerin begonnen, und ich sah einen Flashback von mir, wie ich an der Drehscheibe mit Ton arbeitete...  Ich sah einige Parallelen zu dem, was ich vorher gemacht hatte, aber mit anderen Techniken. Ich habe Zylinder gefertigt, freistehende Objekte, die man nach Belieben neu anordnen kann. Auf diese Weise sind interaktive Kunstwerke entstanden. Ich liebe es, Kunst zu machen, die man anfassen kann. Die farbigen Zylinder verweisen auf Blumen und das Ensemble auf einen Blumenstrauß. Nach der Kombination von recycled Kunststoff und Zink habe ich mit Holz und Zink experimentiert. Die Auszeit von den Ausstellungen hat mir neue Einsichten und neue Wege aufgezeigt. Diese kleineren Objekte geben interessante Tischgespräche und unterscheiden sich komplett von meinen großen Außenskulpturen.
